The AAO’s Professional Development Committee presents

RAD for Beginners

Established in 1990 and last revised in 2008, the Rules of Archival Description (RAD) is the Canadian archival descriptive standard that provides a multi-level, top-down framework to reflect the context of archival records. This informative workshop will provide a brief overview of Canadian descriptive theory and the history of description. Content will be geared towards professionals new to RAD.

Participants will learn how to:

  • navigate and read the RAD rules in the format specific chapters

  • avoid common errors (including dates and physical extents)

  • understand the subjectivity of description (such as the use of file level scope notes)

  • sensitively approach the description of records from BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities

  • modify descriptive practices due to resource considerations

  • standardize descriptive practices at an institution through descriptive policies

When: February 10, 2022, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm

Where: Instructions to join the online platform will be sent closer to the workshop date.
